How to be Alone (and Why it’s Important)
How to be Alone (and Why it's Important)

Firstly, being alone is a good thing. We don’t need to constantly spend our time with others or have outings booked back to back. Being alone does not reflect poorly on who we are or our likability. Getting comfortable spending some quality time with yourself is crucial for your overall well-being.

Time and time again, I’ll have clients tell me “I don’t know how to be alone” or “I don’t feel comfortable being by myself”.  It seems as though this is a common challenge that most people face at any stage in their lives. Whether it’s during the holidays, if they’re single, or just going through a breakup, people do not enjoy being alone.

Why is important:

1) Your relationships with others will strengthen – once you learn how to love time to yourself, you will see a change in the relationships around you.

2) You will no longer be afraid to lose people – you have other relationships that you can rely on and you know you have the ability to make new relationships.

3) You will learn to emotionally support yourself – rather than always relying on others to make you feel better, you can learn to do that for yourself.

How to be alone:

1) Actively schedule some time for yourself – the more you do that, the less lonely you will feel and more comfortable you will get being alone.

2) Mediate – this is the easiest way for you to get comfortable being with yourself. Find guided meditations on YouTube or download free meditation apps (I like to use Stop, Breath, & Think) to help you get started.

3) Do things you love – once you schedule some time to spend with yourself, you will get excited to do those things that you love. If you’re getting over a breakup, read my other post “10 Things to Do Instead of Calling your Ex” for some inspiration!

Remember, it’ll take some getting used to but the more time you spend with yourself the more comfortable it’ll be. Being alone does not mean that you are lonely. Learning how to be alone will have a positive impact on your life, your confidence, and your relationships with others. Want to learn more? Check out my YouTube video on How to Be Happily Single!
